sometimes you want to do something nice for others, but then suddenly your intention to do so, was a lot better than the result. of course, nine out of ten times someone will appreciate just that extra little gesture of kindness he or she did not expect. especially when someone is having a bad day, you can really change that person’s life by just showing some kindness to him or her. but sometimes, kindness backfires. such as in this story, where the sweetest baker in town unknowingly makes a terrible mistake, out of love…
miss martha meacham kept the little bakery on the corner (the one where you go up three steps, and the bell tinkleswhen you open the door). miss martha was forty, she had twofalse teethand a sympatheticheart. two or three times a week an interesting customer came in. he was a middle-aged man, wearing spectaclesand a brown beardtrimmedcarefully. he spoke english with a strong german accent. his clothes were wornand darnedin places, and wrinkled andbaggyin others. but he looked neat, and had very good manners.
he always bought twoloaves of stalebread. fresh bread was five cents a loaf. stale ones were two for five. never did he want anything else but stale bread. once miss martha saw red and brown paint stains on his fingers. she was sure therefore that he was an artist and very poor. no doubt he lived in a garret, where he painted pictures and ate stale bread and dreamed of the good things to eat in her bakery.

often when miss martha sat down to her chops and light rolls and jam and tea she would sigh, and wish that the gentle-mannered artist would share her tasty meal instead of eating his dry crustin that draughtyattic.
often when he came in to buy his bread, he would chat for a while across the showcasewith her. he seemed to like miss martha\’s cheerful words. she couldn’t help thinking about him all the time. how gentle and kindly his eyes shone behind his spectacles! what a broad browhe had! and poor thing, to only live on stale bread!

one day the customer came in as usual, laid his nickelon the showcase, and called for his stale loaves. while miss martha was reaching for them there was a great noise coming from outside. the customer hurried to the door to look what happened, as anyone would have done. suddenly inspired, miss marthaseizedthe opportunity. on the bottom shelf behind the counter was a pound of fresh butter. with a bread knife miss martha made a deep slashin each of the stale loaves, ed a generous quantity of butter, and pressed the loaves tight again.

he would
slice a loaf and– ah! miss martha blushed. would he think of the hand that placed it there as he ate? would he –the front door bell jangled viciously.somebody wanted to come in, making a lot of noise. miss martha hurried to the door. two men were there. one was a young man smoking a pipe — a man she had never seen before. the other was her artist.
his face was very red, his hat was on the back of his head, his hair was wildly rumpled. \”dummkopf!\” he shouted with extreme loudness; and then \”tausendonfer!\” or something like it in german. the young man tried to draw him away.\” i vill not go,\” he said angrily, \”you haf ruined it!\” he cried, his blue eyes blazing behind his spectacles. \”i vill tell you. you vas von meddingsomeold cat!\”
“dummkopf(笨蛋)!” 然后,又喊道:“tausendonfer(简直是五雷轰顶)!”——诸如此类的德语。
miss martha leaned weakly against the shelves. the young man took the other by the collar. \”come on,\” he said, \”you\’ve said enough.\” he dragged the angry customer out at the door to the sidewalk, and then came back. \”guess you ought to be told, ma\’am,\” he said, \”what thisrow is about. that\’s blumberger. he\’s an architectural draftsman. i work in the same office with him.

happy monday, everybody on this beautiful monday–august 27th, 2023. how are you? how was your week? hope everybody is doing well. i for one am doing well myself.
so i don’t know if you guys know or not. but recently, it’s been about 2 weeks now, that i’ve started a new job. that’s right, a brand new job, a fresh start, a new chapter in the book of life. it’s a big deal when you start a new job, i’ve bounced around a few jobs in my young career, but i told myself that when i come back to canada montreal to be exact that i would settle down somewhere and start thinking long-term a career.
unfortunately, the first job that i found which was in downtown that i am not quite living in the city center, it’s more like a suburb, are you guys familiar with the word “suburb”, a suburban area in the city, it’s a, just on the outside of the city center, in fact, it’s across the river. so there is a river separating our home and the downtown core.
now when you work downtown you live across the river, my friends from new york can attest to this, think they’ve got out, if you live on brooklyn or new jersey, and you have to work in manhattan which is city center, that hudson river is the rive that you have to cross and those who live on the other side of the river can end drive work rather than take the train can tell you the traffic on the bridge can be dreadful.that bridge traffic or the tunnel traffic can cause a lot of congestion with people coming from all sides of the river to try and get the city center through these bridges or tunnels can cause a lot of congestion when you getting onto that bridge. so you can’t have to wait a long time. my average commute every morning when i was trying to cross this river and get the city center onto the bridge was about 45 minutes to about 50 minutes, so with just under an hour.
now i spent six months working there and it just wasn’t a good fit. the commute wasn’t worthy. when i say that, it means i wasn’t really looking forward to going to work, therefore, it just made the commute even more dreadful. so i look for a change i said i’ll do six months here and i’ll thank them for the opportunity but i will look somewhere else. so i found somewhere that is on my side of the water, my side of the river, it cut my commute down to 20 minutes, so from 15 minutes to 20 minutes.and i gotta tell you is that, what is it? that, half an hour, you know, that half an hour that i save everyday, which is actually an hour because it’s 30mins there and 30mins back. so that hours i save everyday is so precious. i just feel so much better. i cut my commute time in half and going to work everyday is just great. no waiting in traffic, you know, no rushing to get to work, no rushing to get home and trying beat traffic take your time, live at your own pace. and i gotta tell you this new job, this new opportunity. it’s just going out, so well, so i’m really happy with the rules of… you those who don’t know what i do, i work in advertising. for example, if you go on wechat on your wechat moments, sometimes you’ll see ad placement there, i use to see ad placements in my wechat all the time for buick car or volts wagon or some sort of nike product something.
anyways, those ad are all purchased by advertising agency, so advertising agency will have various clients, volts wagon or this agency will have nike and it’s that agency’ job to find perfect fit for the brands for the clients, so they figure that wechat has a lot of presence in china, so let’s buy some advertise on wechat. well, i’m one of those buyers. i look at the markets, i look at the trends, and i see what the certain demographic of certain client town of certain product. eh, well, that products should be placed in sense advertising. so, it’s kind of strategy role, it’s kind of, you know, yeah, focus role. you really have to know demographic, you have to know, eh, latest trend, too.
anyways, i’m going off about this, but i work in advertising especially digital advertising. so that’s a lot of fun. and with this new job, they have guaranteed me three weeks of vacation this year, three weeks. now, i’m going to introduce a new word to you. some of you might know, some of you might not. but i, my wife and i, my wife sweet-heart that she is and i have never gone on our honeymoon. we haven’t had a honeymoon yet.
do you guys know what honeymoon means? it is honey and moon, honeymoon. and it spells h-o-n-e-y-m-o-o-n, honeymoon. so, the idea of a honeymoon goes way way back in the western culture. it’s the idea that, you know, the first month of a marriage is always the sweetest, so you have to take advantage of this. now after you get married, it’s normal to go on a honeymoon, one week, maybe two weeks, to an exotic location. a lot of people from canada will travel to europe for their honeymoon or they’ll go to hawaii or caribbean islands.
now i’m curious do the chinese have this culture of honeymoon? and if so, what are some popular spots for this honeymoon? if you have been on a honeymoon, i’d love to hear about it. you can leave a question or a comment in the wechat section below. and let me know what is your ideal honeymoon or where have you been for your honeymoon or what’s the popular spot for your honeymoon. i’m really curious to know.
i’m planning my honeymoon right now, but i just don’t know where we’re going to go, not sure yet. i got three weeks vacation. i get used the anytime from now until february and i\’m guessing my wife want to go back to china for chinese new year, but since we both live there i don\’t think that there’s honeymoon. so thinking maybe we go to china together, we leave us sweet little my michael with eh, with his grandparents, and my wife and i go somewhere on a honeymoon, but i don\’t know where. that\’s why be interesting to know where are good spots for a honeymoon is eh, calling from china. because we might be in beijing at that time. so let me know what your idea of good honeymoon is in the comment section below. and i will read them next week and maybe your guys will give me a good idea on where to go for a honeymoon. haha, this couldn’t be so much fun.
last week, i spoke about the nostalgia affect, the nostalgia affect and i got some really good feedback from you guys on the wechat comment section and i’m gonna read a couple of them.
this week starting with raya. raya said, “two years ago, my friends and i came back to suzhou, we followed the baidu map to find the bus station, we walked the wrong way, walked the tunnel, the sunlight gets darker and darker, and a lot of cars pass by, we felt more and more nervous and walked against the wall holding hands and keeping silence. (that look so scary. oh…) we tried to wait for a lift, but nobody stopped except the horn ‘get out of our way’.” (oh, jesus. i\’m so sorry about this situation.) anyway, raya continue to say, \”i couldn\’t figure it out how long we walked, but suddenly there was a parked car next to us. let\’s get in quickly. when we stayed in the car, we just can\’t say anything, we just said \’thank you’.”
what an unfortunate situation you were in, raya! i\’m so sorry about that. and well, baidu map. but i don\’t understand how did you? how did you go the wrong way when you put it in the baidu map? was there some sort of air, or something? sometimes the gps isn\’t one hundred percent accurate, but most of the time, they are right. i wonder what happened there, raya?
anyway, there is jason. jason, thanks for leaving a comment. jason says, \”yesterday was the best day of this year for me, because i kept contact with my best friend. we grew up together. we had some fun. i treated him as my family. but we lost contact in the past few years for some reason. and during that period of time, whenever i came back to my hometown. those old places i saw would remind me of the memories with him. to me the feeling of nostalgia can make you happy, but also make you sad sometimes. (this is very very true. jason) but now everything is going just fine with me. i can feel more happier than now.” oh, that\’s awesome. that\’s great. jason, happy to hear that, really really happy to hear that.
i\’m gonna read one more. i know there\’s a lot of them this week. i\’m really sorry, but we\’re a little short for time this week. i\’m gonna come back next week and i do like half your comments half of my free talk, alright?
so we\’re gonna read one more right here from…oh, long time no see, viola liu.
viola says according to the help my boy adapt to study in kindergarten, i look for a place for him to learn painting in the end of summer vacation. i just want him to know how to enjoy studying with other children in the same age and how to share common hobbies and other things. but he gave me a lot besides what i wanted. his color skin was very well coordinated and unexpected and i want to share with you if i have the chance, my favorite painting is lotus. his teacher told me that kids observe the claude monet painting of lotus. and so video of lotus in the pond. and then they choose color which they like with rubbing and water stratification to finish their own lotus. it took me back to my memory of learning calligraphy when i was in the innocent days. (you still are in the innocent days, viola, come on. hahaha…) well, the purple grapes seems still to be hung on teachers’ garden. i still remember friends chased with each other to paint the ink on face. ok, nick, you hooked my memory. can i say like that? (you can. you hooked my memory. it’s a good saying, viola.) i would like to go back my childhood that my parents were young, full of energy caught up with me saying something you should do or not do. i hope they’ll keep healthy and company with me.”
